Alan R. Felthous, M.D., is Professor and Director of Forensic Psychiatry at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Previously he was Professor at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and School of Law as well as the Medical Director of Chester Mental Health Center, the maximum security forensic hospital for Illinois. Before coming to Illinois in 1998, Dr. Felthous was the Marie B. Gale Centennial Professor of Psychiatry, Director of the Adult Division and Chief of the Forensic Services in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, The University of Texas Medical Branch.

Dr. Felthous has written numerous journal articles and book chapters on topics in legal psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, on antisocial and aggressive behavior and suicide in jails and prisons. He is author of the book "The Psychotherapist Duty to Warn or Protect", senior editor of Behavioral Sciences and the Law; and co-editor of The International Handbook of Psychopathic Disorders and the Law, selected for the 2009 Guttmacher Award. Listed in Best Doctors in America, Dr. Felthous regularly gives talks on forensic topics in the United States and Europe. Dr. Felthous is President of the Association of Directors of Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Programs, past President of the American Board of Forensic Psychiatry and past President of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law.
