Dr. Willmore was born and raised in St. Louis and took his undergraduate and medical degrees, with honors, at Saint Louis University. After completing one year of surgery at Saint Louis University Hospitals, he served in the U.S. Navy as a general medical officer at Annapolis, MD. He then was trained in neurology and neurochemistry at the University of Virginia. In 1975, he began his academic career as an epileptologist and basic researcher at the University of Florida. He attained the rank of an associate professor in 1979 and migrated to the University of Texas-Houston in 1982, where he was promoted to a full professor in 1984.
Dr. Willmore was named to the medical school scholastic honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha, as a third-year student and received a spate of other scholarship awards during his formal education. He has also received a host of honorary awards during his career, especially for teaching. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as both an adult neurologist and clinical neurophysiologist. Dr. Willmore is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Neurology and American Neurological Association. He has been particularly active in the American Epilepsy Society for which he has served on many committees.
Dr. Willmore has distinguished himself during his career as an epileptologist during which he has engaged himself both as an active researcher and clinician. His basic laboratory investigations have involved the experimental induction of epileptic foci, studies of neurotransmitters and their agonists, and various investigations involving the action and pharmokinetics of anti-epileptic drugs. He has also sponsored research candidates for doctoral degrees. As a clinician, Dr. Willmore has conducted multiple anti-epileptic drug trials, directed a comprehensive epilepsy program, published numerous papers on seizure disorders and the use of anti-epileptic drugs, and trained a host of epilepsy fellows. Consequently, Dr. Willmore has been invited to lecture on various aspects of epilepsy both nationally and internationally.
In 1983, Dr. Willmore was invited to interview medical school applicants for the University of Texas-Houston’s School of Medicine. Within a short time, he became a member of the admissions committee and joined its executive board in 1990. In 1996, he was named its vice-chairman. This experience led to a growing interest in medical education and to his current appointment as associate dean for admissions at Saint Louis University’s School of Medicine. This important responsibility will occupy the majority of his time. Nonetheless, Dr. Willmore is available to see referral patients and provide his considerable expertise to the Department of Neurology, especially to its section for epilepsy.
Dr. Willmore sees patients at the Doctor's Office Building.
