Dr. Gunter received her medical degree from the University of South Carolina in 1990.  After completing a transitional year at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, she returned to the University of South Carolina where she completed her general psychiatry residency and forensic psychiatry fellowship at the Hall Institute.  Following training, she remained on faculty at the University of South Carolina and rose to the position of Director of the Forensic Outpatient Evaluation Service for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health.  Before coming to St. Louis University as associate professor, Dr. Gunter was Director of Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Iowa and a consultant for the Iowa Department of Corrections.  While at the University of Iowa she also completed training in research methodology and her research interests include gene-environment interactions in the genesis and maintenance of adult externalizing disorders.  Dr. Gunter is board certified in psychiatry and forensic psychiatry, and her clinical focus is on forensic psychiatry with particular attention to decisional capacity and psychiatric disability.
